The very first Bumpa-Bar Lure was made by John Crossley and Graham Knight in 1983, around June of that year. John and Graham started making lures whilst trying to catch fish on different lures made from any old thing, so they started cutting up an old Falcon Bumper Bar. They made the first one straight and put a bend in it – drilled a hole each end and put a hook on it and away they went.
The first ever catch was a 9 kg Cobia, however it was not the first fish hooked. That was a Queenfish but they lost it at the boat to a shark. They caught, Queenies, Trevally, Mackerel and even Tuna on Bumpa-Bar Lures to name just a few.
Over the past 30 years there have been many great people involved in the continued success of Bumpa-Bar Lures, Jim and Terry Rowe along with Tim Staudinger to name a few.
Through Tim’s burning ambition and extensive field testing the home grown Bumpa-Bar Lure was introduced into the marketplace and the art of Bumpa Barring grew.
As with most home-grown lures, the Bumpa-Bar story is one of determination, hard work and survival to hold strong in a very competitive market often dominated by cheaper imports. With simple beginnings Bumpa-Bar Lures have found their way into many a happy angler’s tackle box and dominated the northern sport fishing arena to attract a large and growing following. If high impact, adrenaline pumping, arm breaking, reel-screaming fishing is your cup of tea, then you will love what is now known as Bumpa-Barring.
